You should give some thought to Ubuntu - open hardware and software are a killer combo. I am a recent convert from Windows when I was given a PC with Vista on it (I have to learn a new OS, well who says that I should learn yours?) and have been very impressed with the community support and the functionality of the system. I am a research engineer with lots of computing tasks that I *thought* I needed Windows for. Not so.

There is no hiding that Ubuntu can be rought around the edjes with respect to some hardware (HW). However, given the number of hours that HW compaies put into making sure that their stuff works with Win, vs. the number of hours the Ubuntu community puts in to making sure that it will work with whatever you’ve got, I think it works surprisingly well. In the end, if market forces put the pressure on HW companies to develope drivers for Ubuntu, then this problem will get better (and the foces are at work, google “dell ubuntu” to see what I mean).

This is just a general comment. You say you became disillusioned with Vista after using it, yet the first entry on this site is January 25th 2006. Vista wasn’t give a retail release until January 30th 2007 - a whole year later - so what were you using that upset you so much? My guess is you’re some long term Mactard posing as an ex Windows fan and are just adding to the general FUD that surrounds an excellent operating system.

…from what I read, Windows7 will be more intrusive to your private computing. I forget the pretty name, but it will try to pre-empt your moves by watching your history.

Aside from the amount of times XP and Vista calls home, this might be moot point.

Isn’t it true that Gates is no longer involved with the running of Microsoft? Judging from this alone it would seem to be not so.

Anyway, it seems that Windows Vista sucks so badly that even the once mighty Gates has been forced to resort to mention the “next great” Windows instead. Talking about vaporware again.

I could care less about Windows Vista, and “Windows 7″? Let’s see if this thing also contains the performance and incompatibility problems, draconian activation and DRM of Vista. If so then Windows XP will be the last windows I will use.

…here’s some comments:

1. Windows7 will be a very intrusive program watching your every move and calling home. Once this becomes more public, Microsoft will have more issues.

2. People who say ‘mac this and mac’ should be eating those words due to the huge patches constantly rolling out for it. There is a reason mac is still has less than 10% of the market.

3. I have to apologize to Windows ME. That program actually ran on a lot of computers.
