It’s too bad MS grunted out such a poor product that drove you nuts, but it’s good to see that at least you moved to a better OS or two (Mac and Ubuntu).
Plus, we all got your cool blog out of it as well – great stuff!
What about those of us who purchased Dells with the software preloaded? I’m sure we paid a higher price for our computers because they have Vista. Please excuse spelling errors. I can’t see what I’m typing.
I wonder if I could simply exchange Vista for XP? I despise Vista. I have had nothing but problems and it really steams me I am expected to upgrade every software package I have just because I bought a new PC. XP works great except IE7 is a joke.
MS has gone to the dogs. Their new products are bloated hogs that favor glitz over performance. I am a power user for business, I don’t want glitz, I want stability, speed and compatibility. Vista offers me nothing.
Vista is a SHAM!
Gross performance, no decent drivers…. now, the SECRET updates! Basicly a different OS than I bought! I am sick of the Vista dance with DRM and activation BS!
I want a refund based on the FACT, MS changed the product without my peremission.
Ms has become a parasitic organization from the time the lowlife Steve Balmar took over.

Vista is a BILLION DOLLAR BUTT F++CK!
I read all the postings about “downgrading” to XP (seems like an upgrade to me), but it only look like it works with Vista business. Any way we home users can go back if Vista was installed by the OEM?
Thankyou for this information, I desperately am completely annoyed with this empty promise packaged with a almost nice vaneer called Vista. I googled this question and came straight here. So has anyone actually gotten a refund or exchange from M$?
I hate Windows Vista!!!! I purchased this computer of mine in June of 2007 and also purchased the Student Edition 2007. Since 11-14-2007 I have had nothing but problems with the updates. It starte off with just 2 updates that wouldn’t download. Now it’s up to 16 updates!!! Windows doesn’t have any answers for me. Hewlet Packard has no intelligent people on thier help lines. I will not do business with either one in the future!!! What a nightmare this expierence has been! Don’t upgrade to Windows Vista!!!
I’m totally happy with my switch to Macs. There’s only one remaining Windows program I still use and that’s for a paid membership based Family Tree program. Once my subscription is up, I’ll be done with Windows forever. If you’re on the fence about Macs… consider a Mac Mini to test the waters. Or look at Psystar’s OpenMac PC for $399

The Canadian MDG computer manufacturer’s tests have shown almost 200 older software programs are incompatible with Vista.
Microsoft’s Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of core OS elements in order to provide content protection for so-called “premium content”, typically HD data from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sources.
“Windows Vista includes an array of “features” that you don’t want. These features will make your computer less reliable and less secure. They’ll make your computer less stable and run slower. They will cause technical support problems. They may even require you to upgrade some of your peripheral hardware and existing software. And these features won’t do anything useful. In fact, they’re working against you. They’re digital rights management (DRM) features built into Vista at the behest of the entertainment industry” – Bruce Schneier
Windows Vista is riddled with problems and gives users and businesses no reason to buy a new PC, according to a report in the Financial Times Deutschland quoting Acer president Gianfranco Lanci.
Hello was wondering if refund still applies even if you had product since It was released? I have my pc partitioned with Vista & Xp I find myself going back to XP websites crash at times messengers like yahoo close from a few spams I mean it should be able to handle the spam. What happened Bill Gates someone put a knife to your throat? You did not have to release it yet! If you like wasting your money send me a portion $300.000 will be fine to pay off some things that’s chump change to you(I won’t be greedy and ask for a million I’m contempt well sort of lol). But I must admit xp is a fine (ok somewhat fine) running product. I speak In Circles…Oh BTW I’m on XP now writing this.

How can we sue Microsoft. I have a brand new computer that is sitting upstairs collecting dust. I am PISSED. HP has outsourced its tech help to India which I’ve called at least 5 times to no avail.
HP headquarters in Cali offered $200.00 check BUT they don’t even know what the problem is. They just want us to go the Ph@uck
away.
We need to hold them and the companies that pre install Vista accountable.
Microsoft is pretty good when it comes to handling PR. Despite this they are still selling Vista which is an enormous night for tech folks to solve problems for. Its just overbearing, over engineered and darn it, no good. The operating system should be invisible – just like air, and let us gone with work without having to worry about the stability of the system all the time.
If anyone has come accross the dreaded ‘User access control’ message in Vista, they will know what I mean
VISTA………..??????????? LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IS JUNK I AM PISSED!! i CUSTOM BUILT MY SYSTEM AND ORDERED VISTA AND IT COST $4,000 FOR MY SYSTEM AND NOW IT IS JUNK!!! WHAT A ASS HOLE IF I EVER SEE BILL GATES HE WILL HAVE TO ASS HOLE’S CAUSE I WILL GIVE HIM A NEW ONE THEN KICK HIM IN THE ASS!!!!!!!
HE IS PIECE OF SHIT AND HE BETTER NEVER HOPE HE SEE’S ME!!!!!!! JACK ASS I HATE HIM HE HAS TRASHED TWO OF MY SYSTEMS FIRST WITH HIS FUCKING MIL SERIOUS NOW VISTA!!!!!
but let’s not sink to their level. let’s stay at a higher plane. let’s all agree vista is bad, very bad, and figure out how we get microsoft to refund the cost and maybe compensate us fo rthe cost of replacing it with XP, especially us non-techies who need to hire someone to do it for us.
Let’s all be happy Apple is taking over th eworld.
When is somebody going to bring a class-action lawsuit against Microsoft for distributing such a worthless and harmful product? Vista has cost the world countless hours of lost production. If Bill Gates wasn’t the greediest person on the planet, he would refund everyone who haphazardly purchased this ridiculous junk. His legacy will not be his anthropology, instead it will be his desire to screw everyone.
I am not techno savvy.I was recommended Vista by a work colleague trusting her advice. I am exasperated as to what to do, even with the most basic of tasks Vista won’t perform.Thing is if I ask for a refund what should someone like me replace it with. i don’t want an all singing all dancing machine.
Val, if someone recomended Vista for you I can’t help but wonder if this person has some kind of hidden grudge against you since I would only recomend it to my worst enemy.
If you can return the computer to the store, I’d say attempt it. Demand a system with Windows XP. You may need to pay a “Downgrade fee” but it shouldn’t be much. If the store can’t do it. Go straight to the computer manufacturers website. Most will be able to ship you your new computer for free within the week.
Why is there not a Lemon Law for operating systems? It seems to work for cars. As someone who has suffered with Windows ME(long ago converted to XP)and more recently Vista, maybe it’s time to talk to our congress people. Microsoft makes billions putting out junk and there seems to be no penalty for doing this. They just laugh all the way to the bank. It’s time for our lawmakers to hit the bastards in the wallet. Next computer’s definately going to be a Mac!

Just buy a Mac. Nuff said. Some people complain about the price. Fine don’t buy now, but in 2 or three months. Buy a Mac, nuff said. Seriously. Buy a Mac. If the next computer purchase you make is a PC you deserve everything you get. Just buy a Mac. F’n Seriously.
If you hate Vista, but you don’t want pay $$$$$$$$$$ for a Kwapintox – or you don’t want to join the cult of Crap – just dual-boot with Ubuntu. It’s much less hassle than buying a whole new XPEN$$$IVE Mac system, it’s just as easy as (if not easier than) boot camp, and pretty much the only thing you’d be losing is games (hence, dual-boot). Plus, it’s free. And, it’s free. AND IT’S AWESOME!!!
P.S. Totally lame “buy in three months” argument, Steven.
i don’t think microsoft will do that. you shouldn’t publish this stuff, it is totally misleading!
OEM products are on the non refundable list. if you read Windows Vista EULA you will notice that in case you do not agree they ask you to contact the manufacturer!
“By using the software, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not
use the software. Instead, contact the manufacturer or installer to determine their
return policy for a refund or credit.”
…and that’s all it says about the refunds, as far as i know.
I dual boot Vista and XP on my Dell work laptop and I have no problem with either.
I agree that when Vista first came out the lack of drivers was an issue. The security control pop-up sucks but it was a positive move by MS to counter the complaints about security loopholes.
I think the main problem is the OEM manufacturers doing crappy installs full of trial and proprietary software. Every OEM machine should come with an original Windows DVD so you can reformat and install everything yourself (or ask a techy friend).
I am also currently testing Windows 7 and it is A LOT better so maybe there will be a great upgrade price (free please) for all Vista users.
I’m no fan of Microsoft and agree they seem to care more about glitz and talking paper clips than speed and reliability but is apple any better? I used to use Macs at University and they were unreliable, slow, expensive and no-one knew how to fix them. If they were more popular than PCs then they would have the focus of all the virus writers and things would be very different.
P.S. Windows XP should then be made free to get rid of Linux. And Macs are toys, not computers.
Let’s start a lawsuit against this Vista. I had a laptop with XP and dell lost it during one of its many many trips back and forth to the repair center.
They replaced it with Vista and I can’t use the thing.
When I’m typing something, the font size changes to tiny tiny font or completely changes to a different screen.
I’m all for the lawsuit
Im all for a lawsuit, they did the same thing with win me. It sucked too, they lost the lawsuit but the judge said they only had to refund for a limited time, needless to say by time the refund period ended they were still selling win me in stores, so everyone after that lost. Lets get it included that the refunds are for every single copy sold, unlimited duration.
I was actually impressed with vista, until I got into moorpgs. Some new games won’t even let us on their servers. so fail. Which doesn’t make any sense, considering making vista hacks is harder than making them in XP. – thoughts from the gaming world.
