All I want to do is activate Windows!

I spent over half an hour on the phone with Microsoft, spread out over three calls (all of which were disconnected by Microsoft) trying to activate Windows XP on my neighbor’s IBM Thinkpad. What do I have to show for it? Nothing. Microsoft thinks the key on the COA sticker is invalid or pirated, and Windows will stop working in 30 days.
